“I’m overjoyed at the opportunity to bring a lasting work of art to my hometown. 'Out and About' highlights the diversity of our community and the universal connection to nature and fitness.” - Sonja Madsen

A sculpture artist by nature, Sonja Madsen typically fabricates creatures of myth to capture emotion and convey experience. Regardless of medium, the Willmar native and budding world-builder seeks to create works reflective of place; in this case, to capture the atmosphere and interconnectedness of the place she calls home. Imbuing the mundane with a dash of the fantastic, her artworks highlight the wonders hidden within ordinary life.

Madsen created "Out and About," a mural that is featured on the walls of the Fitness Court® Studio. Her mural design for the Sperry Park Fitness Court® Studio features graphic human images doing outdoor activities like running, biking and swimming through graphic landscapes and connected by a graphic trail.

“This is such a surreal moment for me,” Madsen said at the ribbon cutting event in July 2023. “I’ve never done anything on this caliber and to have a permanent installation in my hometown, to get to be a part of the welcoming atmosphere and do my part to reflect the interconnectedness of our community is just a surreal opportunity and I am beyond honored.”
