Colorado State University Pueblo celebrates the launch of their Fitness Court® and wellness program.
In early November 2023, the campus community of Colorado State University Pueblo (CSU Pueblo) celebrated the launch of their Fitness Court® and wellness program. Part of UCHealth’s Ready.Set.CO statewide challenge to make Colorado the healthiest state in the nation, CSU Pueblo is no stranger to making health and wellness a top priority on campus.
Founded in 1933 as Southern Colorado Junior College, CSU Pueblo officially joined the Colorado State University System in 2003 to meet the needs of the changing student demographic of nearly 4,000 enrolled students. The 275-acre campus is located in ethnically and culturally diverse Pueblo, a community of more than 120,000, just 100 miles south of Denver. With 34% of its students Hispanic, CSU Pueblo is designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), and a military friendly university.
CSU Pueblo is well-known for its Outdoor Pursuits program that introduces students to all that Colorado has to offer in outdoor activities like rock and ice-climbing, biking, rafting, kayaking, hiking and of course, skiing. Naturally, an outdoor Fitness Court® that is free and accessible to not only the campus community, but the greater Pueblo community, was a natural fit.
CSU Pueblo's Fitness Court® sits between the ThunderBowl, ropes course and the ART indoor baseball and softball training facility. Following the ribbon cutting ceremony remarks from VP of Student Affairs Dr. Marie Humphrey and President Tim Mottet, attendees saw live demonstrations from ambassadors and beloved mascot Wolfie. After the demonstration of all seven stations, staff members went head to head in a friendly challenge versus ThunderWolf club sport athletes.
“Currently, ThunderWolf Recreation offers indoor amenities that allow for a variety of options to engage and energize our people in meaningful and supportive well-being activities,” states Emily McElwain, Assistant Dean of Student Life and Director of Recreation. “The Student Recreation Center is a recreational, fitness and health focal point for the campus, however, we sought to expand to outdoor spaces as an extension of what we offer to our people. Outdoor spaces like the Fitness Court®, engage place, one of our campus’s guiding principles, by capitalizing on the nearly 300 days of sun southern Colorado has to offer!”
The feedback has been very positive on campus with big plans for programming and activation within ThunderWolf Recreation, club and intercollegiate athletics and more.
