Arthritis costs the US economy over $300 billion annually in medical bills, lost wages and associated expenses. It's time to change the game with active aging.

May is Arthritis Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of movement and active aging in managing and preventing arthritis. Did you know: arthritis is the number one cause of disability in the United States? As our population ages, the challenge to stay healthy and active becomes even more crucial. At National Fitness Campaign, we celebrate individuals like Paul Gary, Debbie Thomas, and David Casavant who exemplify the commitment to active aging and show us the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle as a means to manage and prevent arthritis and promote bone health.

Paul Gary, a former Navy serviceman and a dedicated member of SCAN-I, utilizes the San Jacinto, CA Fitness Court® to maintain his rigorous fitness routine. His commitment to fitness is not just about personal health; it's about being prepared to serve his community in times of need. His story is a powerful testament to how fitness can transcend personal benefit and play a crucial role in community readiness and personal resilience. Living an active life is not merely a choice for him; it’s a necessity. His role requires him to be in top physical condition to fulfill his oath to assist in times of disaster and emergency. His rigorous fitness regimen is inspired by his past experiences in the Navy and his continuous drive to use his skills for the betterment of others.

Debbie Thomas's journey with the Fitness Court® near her home in Brockport, NY showcases another example of active aging. Finishing third in the 2023 MVP Health Care Fitness Court® Check-In Challenge, she has integrated the Fitness Court® into her daily routine to manage osteoporosis—a common bone condition in aging adults that can be mitigated through regular physical activity. The variety of exercises available through the Fitness Court® App helps her tailor her workouts to her preferences. Debbie is a testament to the positive impact of outdoor fitness, bodyweight strength training and the importance of tailored fitness routines, inspiring others to prioritize their health and wellness, regardless of age or health conditions.

David Casavant’s active lifestyle also underscores the versatility of the Fitness Court®. At 58, he actively engages in activities like hiking, kayaking, and jogging, and uses the Fitness Court® to maintain his strength and cardiovascular health.  “I'm 58 years old and want to be good to my body so that way I can maintain an active lifestyle in my later years.” David’s approach to fitness focuses on improving range of motion and building strength through basic movements, which are critical in preventing injuries and maintaining overall physical health as one ages.

Arthritis affects 60 million people in the US, severely impacting quality of life, making everyday activities painful and challenging. Regular physical activity is one of the recommended strategies to manage arthritis pain, improve joint function, and reduce stiffness. The Fitness Court®, with its accessibility and variety of equipment, offers a perfect venue for older athletes to engage in low-impact, strength-building exercises that are crucial for joint health.

For those managing arthritis or osteoporosis, incorporating bodyweight exercises from the Fitness Court® can significantly improve your mobility and strength. Exercises like squats, lunges, and gentle stretches help maintain joint function and bone health. It's also essential to engage in activities that enhance cardiovascular health, which is possible with the agility workouts available at the Fitness Court®.

The stories of Paul, Debbie, and David not only inspire but also illuminate the path to active aging. They demonstrate that with the right tools and community support, maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle as we age is both achievable and beneficial in preventing and managing conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis. National Fitness Campaign’s initiative to make fitness accessible to everyone exemplifies our community-focused approach to health that supports our aging population in staying active and healthy.

As we observe Arthritis Awareness Month, let's move more and encourage others to do the same, fostering a community that thrives on active living and longevity!
