Texas Campaign Reaches New Milestone: Grand Prairie Launches Fitness Court Network Across 6 Counties

Six New Fitness Courts Bring Art, Wellness, and Community Together Across Grand Prairie

October 28, 2024

The City of Grand Prairie has made a bold statement in community wellness by launching six state-of-the-art outdoor Fitness Courts simultaneously. This ambitious initiative, in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas and the City of Grand Prairie, represents one of the largest Fitness Court rollouts in Texas and marks a significant step forward in the city’s commitment to health and fitness.

Grand Prairie, a diverse city of over 200,000 that spans across several North Texas counties, has long been dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through innovative recreational opportunities. The city’s Parks, Arts, and Recreation Department, recognized twice as a Gold Medal Award winner by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), led the effort as part of its mission to create vibrant public spaces for all. The new Fitness Courts are located at Tyre Park, Mi Familia Park, EpicCentral, Fish Creek Linear, Freedom Park, and Charley Taylor Park, with each site chosen to ensure accessibility across the city’s six council districts.

Each Fitness Court also serves as a cultural hub, featuring unique artwork by local and regional artists that transforms the spaces into landmarks for wellness, fitness, and community bonding. The installations include "Path to Wellness" by Angel Amaya at Tyre Park, "Unity in Motion" by Jeffie Brewer at Mi Familia Park, and "The Active Life" by Juan Velazquez at EpicCentral. Fish Creek Linear hosts "Natural Harmony" by Francisco Javier, "Freedom in Fitness" by Sarah Ayala is showcased at Freedom Park, and "Community Flow" by Daniella Flores enriches Charley Taylor Park. These pieces not only beautify the Fitness Courts but also embody the spirit of the neighborhoods they serve, fostering connections and drawing people together for a shared purpose.

“By bringing six Fitness Courts to our city, we’re making a powerful investment in the health and wellness of every resident. This is just the beginning of our journey to create a healthier, more active Grand Prairie,” said Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen.

The city’s comprehensive Discovery 2026 Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan includes these Fitness Courts as a key component of its strategy to create connected, active communities. With over 613 miles of sidewalks and plans for continuous bike lanes, Grand Prairie aims to make it easier for residents to engage in physical activity. The Fitness Courts offer convenient, free outdoor exercise options, encouraging residents to integrate fitness into their everyday lives and promoting health equity across diverse neighborhoods.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, a partner committed to fostering wellness throughout the state, played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life. Their support aligns with the city’s efforts to address health disparities, reduce physical inactivity, and encourage sustainable fitness habits for residents of all ages and abilities. By launching all six Fitness Courts simultaneously, the partnership demonstrates a strong commitment to removing barriers to fitness and making health resources accessible to everyone.

“In addition to improvement in physical health, physical activity improves behavioral health conditions and can foster opportunities to make new social connections,” said Dr. Mark Chassay, chief medical officer at BCBSTX, “About half of U.S. adults are not getting enough physical activity in their daily lives. Helping fund these Fitness Courts is just one example of how we can support optimal health outcomes for all Texans, right in their own communities.”

The ribbon-cutting celebrations, which took place in mid-October, brought together city leaders, Blue Cross representatives, and community members for events at each location. The ribbon cutting ceremonies included group workout classes, fitness demonstrations, and health resources, all of which provided opportunities for residents to experience the new amenities firsthand. The city sees this initiative as more than just a collection of Fitness Courts; it’s a movement aimed at fostering community connections, reducing stress, and supporting the overall well-being of residents.

Looking ahead, the city plans to host a series of community events, including fitness boot camps, health screenings, and wellness challenges, to encourage long-term use of the Fitness Courts. This initiative sets a new standard for city-led health programs, showcasing the impact of partnerships between local government, healthcare organizations, and community stakeholders.

Grand Prairie’s approach demonstrates how thoughtful planning and collaboration can build healthier, more connected communities.
