September 5, 2024

The University of Charleston (UC) has unveiled its first outdoor Fitness Court, becoming the second location in West Virginia to introduce this innovative public health initiative. Joining West Virginia University's Fitness Court, UC's new facility promises to enhance the fitness and wellness offerings for both its campus community and the wider Charleston area.

The launch event, held on a bright summer morning, featured a high profile guest in U.S. Senator Joe Manchin III, who participated in student-led demonstrations showing the crowd how to use each of the seven stations. The Fitness Court, strategically located on UC's picturesque campus along the Kanawha River, offers a robust platform for various exercise routines, making fitness more accessible to everyone in the community.

Senator Manchin, known for his commitment to public health and wellness, praised the initiative, emphasizing its potential to improve the health and well-being of West Virginians.

"This Fitness Court is a fantastic addition to the University of Charleston and the entire Charleston community," said Manchin. "It's an excellent example of how we can work together to promote healthier lifestyles and ensure that fitness opportunities are available to all."

UC President Dr. Martin Roth highlighted the university's dedication to fostering a healthy and active environment. "As Charleston's University, we are committed to providing top-notch fitness and wellness amenities for our students, faculty, staff, and the broader community," said Roth. "This Fitness Court is a significant step towards achieving that goal, offering a comprehensive outdoor fitness program that is accessible to everyone."

UC's campus, which already serves as a hub for outdoor activities, is an ideal location for the Fitness Court. The university's open-campus policy allows residents and visitors alike to enjoy its scenic pathways for walking, biking, and running. The addition of the Fitness Court further enhances the campus's appeal as a destination for health and wellness.

Moreover, the Fitness Court is expected to be a popular spot for UC's athletic department, home to approximately 600 student-athletes. These athletes, who train rigorously for their respective sports, now have access to a state-of-the-art outdoor facility that complements their indoor training regimes.

The Fitness Court also aligns with UC's efforts to attract tourists to the area. The campus is already home to a unique wooden swing, a popular attraction situated along the Kanawha River that offers a picturesque view of the West Virginia State Capitol Building. The new Fitness Court adds another layer of attraction, drawing fitness enthusiasts and tourists alike.
