The City of Douglas, Arizona, celebrated a remarkable milestone this year with the launch of its first Fitness Court®, a project that embodies health, wellness, and community engagement.

This initiative was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Arizona Complete Health and the Legacy Foundation of Southeast Arizona, marking a significant step toward enhancing outdoor fitness opportunities in Douglas. With a population of just over 16,500 residents, Douglas is actively promoting health equity through projects like this, which align with the city’s Community Services Master Plan. Future park and trail expansions further underscore Douglas’s commitment to fostering healthier lifestyles and creating a thriving community for all ages and abilities.

The launch event, held last month, was a vibrant celebration of community spirit and marked the introduction of the first Arizona Complete Health Fitness Court® in the state. Hosted by emcee Jeff Davenport, the ceremony featured performances from the Douglas High School Cheerleaders and appearances by their mascot, Spike. The Douglas Special Olympics team brought their energy to the event, and Mayor Donald Huish, along with members of the city council and Douglas Border Patrol Agents, spoke passionately about the importance of health and wellness. A highlight of the day was the friendly yet competitive "Battle of the Badges" between the Douglas Police and Fire Departments, showcasing the camaraderie within the city, while also demonstrating how the seven stations of the Fitness Court® are used.

“We are pleased to partner with the National Fitness Campaign to bring this innovative wellness campaign to Douglas,” said Martha Smith, Arizona Complete Health Plan President. “By offering accessible, no-cost exercise programs, the outdoor Fitness Court® and digital wellness program aligns with our mission of transforming the health of the communities we serve, one person at a time.”

Arizona Complete Health’s extensive experience in administering health benefits and behavioral health services across Arizona underscores their dedication to improving community health and access to wellness resources. The Legacy Foundation of Southeast Arizona also played a pivotal role in bringing this project to fruition.

“The Legacy Foundation is delighted to have partnered with the City of Douglas on this project,” said Margaret Hepburn, CEO of the Legacy Foundation. “Wellness activities and healthy lifestyles are fundamental to our Legacy Foundation mission, and the workout facilities are completely aligned with our work. Congratulations to all on this important addition to the community!”

The City of Douglas expressed gratitude for the Legacy Foundation’s generous contributions, emphasizing the critical role of partnerships in creating lasting community impact. Douglas Mayor Donald Huish highlighted the project’s significance for Douglas.

“Installing the NFC Fitness Court in our community is a major step forward in promoting health, wellness, and outdoor recreation for all our residents,” he said. “This addition reflects our city's commitment to creating accessible spaces that encourage active lifestyles and community interactions. We're excited to offer a modern, inclusive fitness option that everyone can enjoy, and we're proud to support initiatives that enhance the quality of life for everyone in Douglas. We are very grateful for the support from the National Fitness Campaign and Arizona Complete Health. Without them, this would not be possible.”

The City of Douglas, with its diverse recreation and wellness infrastructure, continues to prioritize health equity and accessible outdoor spaces. This Fitness Court® represents not only an opportunity for physical fitness but also a reflection of the city’s broader vision of fostering community engagement and healthier lifestyles. Thanks to the support of dedicated partners like Arizona Complete Health and the Legacy Foundation of Southeast Arizona, Douglas is setting a powerful example of how collaboration can transform community wellness.
