The launch event drew residents, civic leaders, Columbia’s local Fire Department, and fitness enthusiasts for a day filled with excitement. Demonstrations led by local Fire highlighted the seven-station bodyweight circuit training system, designed to accommodate users of all fitness levels. From students to seniors, the Fitness Court is open to everyone aged 14 and older, providing a welcoming space to improve physical and mental well-being.
Mayor Daniel Rickenmann emphasized the Fitness Court’s potential to create a healthier Columbia.
“This is a perfect example of how public spaces can be transformed into hubs for health and well-being,” said Rickenmann. “By partnering with Prisma Health, we’re showing how Columbia is prioritizing fitness and community wellness.”
Greenview Park’s Fitness Court aligns with the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department’s mission to enhance the lives of its citizens. The department’s vision goes beyond recreation, aiming to create parks that connect technology, inclusivity, and wellness. With over 60 parks, 11 miles of greenway, and a commitment to quality experiences, Columbia continues to redefine the role of public spaces.
The Fitness Court’s design is tailored to meet the needs of people of all abilities and fitness levels. Stephen Venugopal, Sports Performance Manager with Prisma Health’s Apex Athletic Performance, highlighted its versatility. “I could literally have someone who is an advanced athlete, and someone who’s a grandparent coming off of a knee replacement — and both of them could get an effective form of exercise here,” said Venugopal.
Seniors who frequent Greenview Park are already feeling the benefits. “It looks like things that we can do, that’s not gonna be stressful on our joints, and that’s the key when you get older,” said Sandra Wilson. Her friend, Doris Hill, added with a laugh, “I’m already old. I was taught to move, my Mama said get up and move, every morning she said get up, and move.”
In addition to celebrating the opening of the Greenview Park Fitness Court, Columbia is preparing for the launch of its seventh Fitness Court at Finlay Park in the near future. This expansion reflects the city’s commitment to providing equitable access to outdoor fitness resources for residents across the Midlands.
Randy Davis, Director of Parks and Recreation, highlighted the transformative nature of this addition. “This Fitness Court reflects our mission to make Columbia a healthier, stronger city,” said Davis. “Our parks are places where individuals and neighborhoods can connect, thrive, and achieve their health goals together.”
