How Cities Plan and Fund a Fitness Court Installation
The Fitness Court works because cities make it work. Partner cities across the country are using their Fitness Courts as anchors for community wellness, activating parks, engaging residents, and building free outdoor fitness infrastructure that serves every neighborhood. Two examples of what that looks like on the ground.
Activating a Movement: Activating a Movement: Virginia’s Capital Catapults Aetna’s Statewide Wellness Campaign
Aetna and Richmond are Championing Fitness Equity
When Aetna partnered with the National Fitness Campaign, they set out to make wellness accessible to all Virginians. Less than a year later, that vision came to life in Richmond's Southside with the launch of the city's very first outdoor Fitness Court.
Building a Healthier Lima: Mayor Smith's Vision for Community Wellness
Lima Champions Free, Accessible Fitness on the Waterfront
Driven by a community-backed vision, Mayor Sharetta Smith and the City of Lima are turning the scenic Ottawa River Bikeway into a vibrant hub for public health. Paired with local ambassador-led classes, this northwestern Ohio city is proving that creating a healthier, more connected community starts with making wellness accessible to everyone.
Greenview Park Sets the Stage for Wellness with Columbia’s New Fitness Court
Elevating Everyday Wellness at Greenview Park
From local firefighters and student athletes to neighborhood seniors, the City of Columbia is bringing the community together through a shared commitment to public health. By teaming up with Prisma Health to install a versatile, free outdoor gym at Greenview Park, Columbia is transforming its public spaces into high-impact hubs for inclusive wellness.
Building Wellness Impact in Your Community
Every Fitness Court comes with a program. Our cities get dedicated support from launch day through long-term community activation.
Public Relations & Media Support
We give cities the press materials, campaign assets, and media support they need to announce their Fitness Court and build public awareness from day one. Every launch is an opportunity to tell a story that resonates with the whole community.
Ribbon Cutting & Challenge Planning
A great launch creates momentum that lasts. We help cities plan ribbon-cutting ceremonies, community fitness challenges, and activation events that bring residents out and keep them coming back.
Ambassador Training & Activation
We train local Fitness Court Trainers to lead free classes and keep the Fitness Court active year-round. Cities with strong Ambassador programs consistently see the deepest and most lasting community engagement.
Planning a Fitness Court involves site assessment, funding, permitting, and community engagement. National Fitness Campaign guides cities through every step. Below are the questions we hear most from mayors, city managers, and planning teams starting that process.
What's the first step for a city interested in a Fitness Court?
Connect with our planning team. From there, we assess site feasibility, identify funding options available in your region, and walk through the full planning process from site requirements to installation timeline.
What size city is a good fit for a Fitness Court?
All of them. The Campaign includes cities and municipalities of every size, from small towns like Jay, FL with around 500 residents to major cities like San Francisco. What matters isn't population size but a community's commitment to providing free, accessible outdoor fitness for its residents.
How does the public-private partnership work?
National Fitness Campaign manages a national grant program supported by a network of regional healthcare partners, including Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, UCHealth, and Priority Health. These organizations fund community wellness initiatives as part of their preventive health strategy.
What does NFC provide beyond the equipment?
NFC is a full partner and a consulting group of experts who have done this hundreds of times. We help cities build local consensus, navigate approvals, identify funding, and walk through the grant process. We also support the launch with press materials, community programming tools, and Ambassador training.
Does it work in cold climates?
Yes. Fitness Courts are built for year-round outdoor use and are actively installed across cold-weather states including Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Colorado. The equipment holds up across all four seasons.
What maintenance is required?
Very little, by design. The Fitness Court uses durable, weather-resistant materials built for high-traffic public environments. Our team provides inspection guidance during the installation process and stays available to partner cities post-launch.
NFC is calling on Mayors, Civic and Education leaders, and Community Champions to join the urgent fight against sedentary lifestyles and preventable diseases. We can make a difference if we work together to increase outdoor movement and provide wellness activities that are equitable, accessible and free! Let’s build a free outdoor Fitness Court® within a 10-minute bike ride of every American, together.
